Land excursions

Lunch not included | half-day excursion | Starts at 09h00 or at 14h00

Enjoy a memorable boat trip to Changuu Island, popularly known as Prison Island, located a short distance from Stone Town. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes by motorised boat, depending on sea conditions. The island has a fascinating and complex history. It was once owned by a wealthy Arab merchant and was associated with the detention of enslaved people. A prison building was later constructed on the island, although it did not serve as a major prison in the way its name might suggest. The island was also used as a quarantine station during outbreaks of infectious diseases along the East African coast. Today, Prison Island is celebrated for its beautiful white-sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and lush natural surroundings. One of its most popular attractions is its population of giant Aldabra tortoises, alongside peacocks and other wildlife species. Visitors can explore the island, learn about its history, observe the tortoises, or simply relax by the sea. The surrounding waters also offer opportunities for swimming and snorkelling when conditions allow.
